Plated vs Buffet...What's the Difference?

Across our extensive meal selection, Bonita Golf Course offers a range of plated and buffet options, all priced around the same dollar range, and all take about the same amount of time in an event’s timeline. So, plated vs buffet meal service… What’s the difference?

What is the best fit for your event?

Everyone has an opinion, but this article is meant to lay out the pros and potential cons of each, specifically to how we operate here at Bonita Golf Course. Check out this article from The Knot for even more generalized information.

Here are a few elements to consider if you’re in the air on the meal service that would best benefit your event and vision. Rest assured, no matter your selection, our experienced Executive Chef takes great pride in his work, and you and your guests will leave with full, happy bellies!

Plated Meal Service

plated vs buffetPros:

  • Elegant and structured two-course meal
    • Guests served directly without having to get up
  • Everyone receives the same amount of food
  • Upgraded meal selections (petit filet mignon and Chilean seabass anyone??)
  • Frees up the guests’ attention for another element of your program
    • Entertainment, video montage, speech, etc.
  • Helps facilitate meal service for large 240+ guest parties
  • Offering guests a selection of up to two meal choices on the menu give the element of personalization

Potential Cons:

  • The entire service team is involved with meal service, therefore not available to serve beverages during this limited time.
    •      Servers do everything in their power to let their guests know they will be unavailable during meal service and try to offer refills and next rounds to prepare their tables of their absence; however, this is not always fully understood by the guests.
    •      During meal service, our team is focused on serving the room as a whole so that the flow from the kitchen to the guest is as seamless as possible.
    •      Guests are welcome to go to the bar for service; however, we’d love the opportunity to serve them as soon as meal service is complete.
  • Guests arriving late, not willing to stay seated during service
  • Meal service is an active element of your timeline, meaning other elements (i.e. photobooth, calling people for photos etc.) create obstacles for efficient service.

Buffet Meal Service

Pros:

  • Large offering and portion considerations
  • Allows for seconds (thirds, fourths… no judgement here!)
  • Beautiful display – the Chef takes great care in his presentation while our Events Team decorates the buffet line, creating a beautiful meal service.
  • Each buffet offers two main proteins/entrées, allowing guests to pick and choose their preference, whether they like one more than the other, or want to try both! The choice is up to them, making the buffet offering an easier logistics choice, in general.
  • Servers are available through meal service to retrieve beverages, refills, and buss, allowing “big drinking” events to be better served.

Potential Cons:

  • Guests must get up to get their plates.
  • More action in the room during meal service (can sometimes work well, depending on if your guests are mobile and socializing)
  • Buffet table and space to queue will need to be accommodated when designing your floor plan.
    •      Buffet lines usually cannot be accommodated for large parties of 240+ (some exception when events do not require the dance floor – celebrations of life, for example).
    •      The buffet line remains in the room throughout the event.

So, plated vs buffet… What’s the difference and which is the best fit for your event? After weighing each category, only YOU can decide the best fit for your vision for meal service!
